Waiting for the Exam: Resources

Do I need work experience?

To be a CPA in the state of Maryland you must have some "real world" practical work experience. You have several options in the type of accounting duties you perform and where you choose to work, but remember an actively licensed CPA must verify the work experience.

How much experience do I need?

Candidates applying for an initial license between October 1, 1999 and September 30, 2000 must have completed 6 months (1,000 hours) of practical work experience completed in not more than 3 years and not less than 6 months.

Candidates applying for an initial license on or after October 1, 2000 must have one year (2,000 hours) of practical work experience to be completed in not more than 3 years and not less than 1 year.

What qualifies as practical work experience?

The State Board of Public Accountancy defines practical work experience as work which "includes providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills." Such practical work experience may be obtained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice.

IMPORTANT: An actively licensed CPA must verify the work experience.

How do I document my work experience?

You must submit a "CPA Work Experience" form. This form is available online or call the State Board at 410-333-6322 to request a copy.
