FAQ

Are CPAs and accountants the same thing? Yes and no. All CPAs are accountants but all accountants are not certified public accountants. The principal differences between accountants and CPAs are education, experience and opportunity. Becoming a CPA is a challenging goal, but one very much within your reach. In order to become a CPA, there are education and experience requirements you'll need to fulfill and a uniform exam that you must pass. Receiving your CPA certification distinguishes you from other business professionals — you will benefit from increased trust, opportunities and financial rewards. For more FAQs, go to:

How to make community colleges work for you

Students attend community colleges for a number of reasons: affordable cost; distance from home; they want to improve their grades before applying to a four-year college; they’re unsure of their career path and want to get a feel for it by starting off at a smaller college; or maybe they want to get their general requirements out of the way before transferring somewhere else.

College track: February schedule for juniors

  • Register online for the April SAT or the April ACT tests (or both, depending on your preference and the recommendations of the colleges you're interested in).
  • Spring is a good time to take the SAT or ACT. You can redo a test in the fall if you're not happy with your results. You also want to make sure colleges have enough time to review your scores.

    TCPA member profile

Meet Porsha P. Pickett, UMUC MBA student and employee at State of Maryland Office of Legislative Audits.

  • Hobbies: Reading John Grisham novels, avid movie watcher, tutoring young children
  • Favorite movie: "The Wiz"
  • Why I want to be a CPA: I am interested in almost every aspect of accounting there is — particularly personal income taxes, forensic accounting and accounting systems. Although I have not yet had the experience in working in any other field except governmental accounting, I anticipate obtaining the opportunity to broaden my knowledge skills and satisfy my accounting interests in other areas. So by becoming a CPA, I have a better opportunity of reaching these goals.
  • Favorite course: Income Tax Accounting I & II
  • Least favorite course: Cost Accounting
  • What people say when I tell them my career choice: "So, will you be able to do my taxes this year?" And I always have to tell them that just because I was an accounting major and work as an auditor for the state government, that does not necessarily mean that I do taxes. However, I do enjoy helping friends and family prepare them.
