How hip are you?

Sometimes it's hard to keep up with current events and who's hot or not. Or maybe you know what's going on, but your personal tastes are such that you just don't get what's driving the "hip" crowd into a tizzy. This quick quiz will tell you if you're "with it" or if you need a hip replacement.

CPA: Three letters that speak volumes

Few professional designations carry the weight of the certified public accountant credential. These three letters — CPA — are immediately understood and widely respected in the business world. Considering the variety of career paths, salaries and working environments available to those who earn the CPA, it's not surprising that it remains one of the most popular and flexible professional credentials.

  •   Accounting word of the week: M

Matching principle: A fundamental concept of accounting. In any one given accounting period, you should try to match the revenue you are reporting with the expenses it took to generate that revenue in the same time period, or over the periods in which you will be receiving benefits from that expenditure. A simple example is depreciation expense. If you buy a building that will last for many years, you don't write off the cost of that building all at once. Instead, you take depreciation deductions over the building's estimated useful life. Thus, you've "matched" the expense, or cost, of the building with the benefits it produces, over the course of the years it will be in service. www.startheregoplaces.com/

    June for juniors

After school ends, get on the road to visit colleges. Seeing the college firsthand, taking a tour and talking to students help you decide whether or not a school is right for you. Although it is ideal to visit colleges during the academic year, going in the summer will still be valuable. Admission offices employ their students to give tours and answer questions from prospective students and their parents. Take the SAT, the SAT II and / or the ACT.
