Lights! Camera! Accounting?

In the multibillion-dollar entertainment industry, CPAs have found a glamorous niche providing financial services to Hollywood studios, production companies and a whole universe of artists and technicians — from box-office superstars and music industry moguls to truck drivers and B-movie bit players.

And the winner is ... Villa Julie!

The Villa Julie College Accounting Association is the first to sign up 100 percent of its members to TCPA membership. We send our congratulations — and a check for $250 — to association President Lisa Patrick, Professor Lynn Duncan and all 80 members of this exceptional group of future CPAs. The Accounting Association plans to use the money (in addition to other funds) to fund a student instructor position for Introductory Accounting.

Young people are spending big — and investing, too

Chris Stallman, 21, and Sarah Harper, 20, are part of a growing group of young people who are interested in personal financial planning, investing, even saving for retirement. Now. When they're young. Just like you're supposed to.

Want a career in business? Take these courses in high school

If you're thinking about a business career, there are classes you can take right now while you're still in high school that can help you on your way. In addition to the core classes you're probably already taking — English, math, science, history — there are other courses that can help you build the communication and analytical thinking skills you've been developing throughout your life.

TCPA + FBLA = opportunity

Tomorrow's CPA has established a partnership with Future Business Leaders of America in Maryland and DECA. We look forward to contributing speakers to address these groups on the CPA role in business and the CPA career; to serve as judges in competitions; and to take part in mock interviews and other FBLA programs. Tell your advisor to invite a CPA to your next meeting.

Personal finance: Play your cards right

For all the scary statistics about credit-card abuse, there are benefits to having a card when you're young and learning how to make the best use of it. A credit card gives you financial flexibility in a pinch and can help you establish a record of paying your bills on time, which will be important later when you want to buy a house or a car.
