What's the career outlook for CPAs?

Read the 2004-05 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Career Guide to Industries, recently issued on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Web site. Highlights include the following:
  • Most jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Overall job opportunities should be favorable, although job seekers who obtain professional recognition through certification or licensure, a master's degree, proficiency in accounting and auditing computer software, or specialized expertise will have an advantage.
  • An increase in the number of businesses, changing financial laws and regulations, and increased scrutiny of company finances will drive growth of accountants and auditors.

CPA exam delayed in Maryland

A legal technicality has required the review and approval of a new contract that will enable Maryland's State Board of Public Accountancy to register candidates for the new computerized exam. If the contract is approved as expected on April 28, candidates should be able to begin testing on or about May 3. For more information, go to:

  • Least favorite course: English
  • What people say when I tell them my career choice: Their eyes get big and they let out a breath of air and say good luck because they couldn't do it.
