More moolah for accounting majors

The average starting salary offer for accounting majors is $42,155, an increase of 1.9 percent over last year, according to a quarterly report published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

CPA Exam: latest from the State Board

The Maryland State Board of Public Accountancy reported that during the first month of the computerized exam there were 347 transactions, including 145 original applications from CPA candidates. Other news:

  • Some applications were denied were due to lack of required courses in business ethics, oral communication or written communication.
  • The Board cautions candidates who register online that their company e-mail may intercept notifications regarding the exam as spam. Candidates should advise their IT persons at the office or consider using their personal e-mail address at home.
  • Candidates MUST bring the notice of eligibility to schedule with them to the exam site. Personal ID, which is required to sit for the exam, must match exactly the name on the notice to schedule.
  • The first exam window ended Saturday, May 31. The next window begins July 1.

AICPA scholarships for minority accounting students

AICPA scholarships for minority accounting students provide competitive awards to outstanding full-time undergraduate minority students at regionally accredited institutions to encourage their selection of accounting as a major, entry into the profession and ultimately achieving the CPA designation. Full-time graduate students (who are not CPAs) seeking a master's degree in accounting or taxation and students pursuing a master's in business administration, if their undergraduate degree is in accounting, are also eligible for this program.
