CPA exam update

The Maryland State Board of Public Accountancy reports that exam grades for the most recent computerized exam will be released shortly. Students had a few complaints about the exam. One issue was the lack of familiarity with the requirement to cut and paste text as part of the research without editing it. Some candidates edited the text and this caused a manual re-grading of the exam. Another issue was the loss of time due to systems going down during the taking of the exam. In some instances, this could cause loss of test data.

Smaller accounting firms jump for new clients in corporate-reform atmosphere

The Big Four auditors have dropped dozens of small- and mid-size public companies — many in the tech sector — from their client rosters. Why? Chalk it up to Sarbox.

You can get a job with any major

Mick Jagger, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandra Day O'Connor all had the same major. And you won’t believe what Ashton Kutcher studied in college.

Computers out, accounting in

The most obvious recent trend is a retreat from computer science, which was hot in the 1990s before the tech bubble burst and companies began offshoring programming. What emerged as one substitute is actually one of the older standbys: accounting.

Credit card marketing

Maryland Consumers recently surveyed the credit card marketing policies of Maryland public universities and issued a report entitled Graduating Into Debt. The survey found that a number of colleges in Maryland continue to allow aggressive marketing to students, including tables offering free gifts for applying for a credit card and that education provided to students about the proper use of credit cards is inadequate. A copy of the report can be found at:

Accountants, in demand, seeing hefty pay hikes

Some of the increases are to retain talent being courted by corporations who, as business heats up and Sarbanes-Oxley reporting requirements ratchet up, are willing to pay to bring them in-house. Boston and Seattle are leading the way.
