What do CPA firms want?

See what Big Four firm Ernst & Young is looking for in entry-level accountants. Part one: The basics:
  • Degree in accounting — strong preference for a degree that meets Maryland's 150-hour requirement
  • Appearance — look, speak, act professionally
  • Experiences — well-rounded; community involvement, leadership, team orientation
  • Work experience — not required, but usually helps prepare student for professional environment and helps with appearance
  • Core competencies — skills and knowledge


Counting students

The hot new career field is auditing. Educators say they haven't seen major news drive a career field to this extent in 30 years, since Watergate made every young person in America dream of being a journalist.

Could you get an A in 'Philosophy and Star Trek?'

College courses aren't all Econ 101 and The History of Europe: 1500-Present. A trend among many colleges and universities is to offer courses that are slightly off the beaten track. They may be no less serious than traditional courses, but they certainly cover new academic ground.

Rules spur demand for accountants

While many professions have been slow to hire, accounting firms have been adding to their payrolls, leading to greater pay and perks. Annual pay for entry-level accountants at one firm rose about $10,000 (to between $50,000 and $55,000) in two years.

Accounting word of the week: Q

Quarterly report: Unaudited document required by the SEC for all U.S. public companies, reporting the financial results for the quarter and noting any significant changes or events in the quarter. Quarterly reports contain financial statements, a discussion from the management, and a list of "material events" that have occurred with the company (such as a stock split or acquisition).
