Entries for the contest, which awards $1,000 to a high-school level teacher who emphasizes personal finance in their lessons, must be postmarked by Thursday, Feb. 17. AICPA issues study on accounting grads, recruits for 2002–03
The report provides information regarding the number of bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees awarded in 2003 as well as the hiring of college graduates that year. Some highlights:
- More than 37,000 students were awarded bachelor's degrees in accounting and close to 13,000 were awarded master's degrees. These numbers represent a 6 percent increase in bachelor's degree recipients and a 30 percent rise in master's degrees, versus the previous academic year.
- There was an overall increase of 17 percent in accounting enrollments for the
three-year period 2000–03.
- Almost three-quarters of the graduates (72 percent) accepted accounting / auditing positions, more than one-fifth took assignments in taxation and 3 percent began work in management consulting for public accounting firms.
- While 18 percent of new hires were minorities, the largest firms are the most ethnically and racially diverse.

Salary survey: It pays to be a CPA
Accountants with at least one professional certification whether it be a CPA license or an MBA reported substantially higher salaries than accountants with no certification, according to a new salary survey just released. Those with a CPA license reported a much higher average salary ($73,418) than those without a CPA license ($52,513).
