FAQ: Should someone with average math skills even consider an accounting major?

A: Absolutely. While math is an important part of the accounting major and the CPA profession, it is not the only part. Accountants and CPAs are required to be articulate thinkers and communicators as well as leaders. The skills you acquire by studying accounting can help you in any area of business. The best way to determine how right accounting is for you is to take classes on the subject, as well as discuss career options with teachers and professionals in the field. Runners braved the wind and rain at Rash Field for the annual 1040K Race and 1040EZ Fun Walk, sponsored by the Maryland Association CPAs. More than 200 people took part in the race to benefit Maryland Saves, a new organization dedicated to helping lower income families manage their personal finances. Maryland Saves will receive the net proceeds from the race, which this year totaled more than $4,000. Thank you, runners and the MACPA!

Forensic accounting: Provides for an accounting analysis that is suitable to a court of law which will form the basis for discussion, debate and ultimately dispute resolution. Forensic accounting encompasses investigative accounting and litigation support. Forensic accountants utilize accounting, auditing and investigative skills when conducting an investigation. Equally critical is the ability to respond immediately and to communicate financial information clearly and concisely in a courtroom setting.
