CPA exam candidates: January - February scores being reported

The Board of Public Accountancy is now receiving scores for candidates who took sections of the CPA exam in January and February 2005. The scores are being reported by the AICPA and NASBA to the Board on a candidate-by-candidate basis and by examination section. The Board does not receive all of the examination scores at the same time. The Board notifies each candidate via e-mail when the score for a particular examination section has been received and is available to the candidate for viewing on the Board's examination score Web site.

Firms say associations are beneficial

A new survey says companies value employees who not only have the technical expertise required for their jobs but also exhibit a commitment to their profession. That includes membership in associations like TCPA and the MACPA.

Choice between summer job, internship isn't always clear

Sometimes a traditional summer job — think retail, waitressing, lifeguarding, house-painting and the like — proves a lot more substance than the endless hours of mind-numbing clerical work that pass for an internship at some companies. If the choice is between an internship offering meaningless work and an unglamorous but more substantial summer job, then the latter could be the better choice, some career experts say.

Movie maker calls his tale of Enron greed 'horror film'

It's a tale about a corporate culture gone so far off the rails that Enron has become a metaphor for everything evil in corporate America. Shakespeare would have licked his chops over this one.

Personal finance: Young people's debt skyrocketing

A recent survey of MetLife clients and employers found that 40 percent of workers ages 21 to 30 had not begun to save for retirement — and many young adults have little clue how to even begin doing so.

Three top tips for getting hired

1. If you are looking for a job, market your background and skills to everyone you know, even your hairdresser, since you never know who may know someone that could lead you to your next job.

2. If a recruiter or prospective employer calls you with an opportunity that may not be exactly what you are seeking and you have the time to interview and geographically it is not completely out of reach, go to the interview anyway, since it is good practice for answering different questions. Also, other opportunities may arise from the experience.

3. Do not use your e-mail address with your current employer for your job search. And if you do use employer's computer to access your personal e-mail account(s) in conducting your job search, do not upload your resume from a diskette within a personal e-mail account accessed from an employer's computer, since a copy of the document that you will attach to the e-mail will most likely be stored somewhere on that computer's hard drive.
