Back-to-school fears: Four ways to survive

The truth is, it's not so much doing something stupid as the fear of doing something stupid that makes going back to school — or starting anything new — so tough. encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/

TCPA + FBLA = opportunity

Here's great news! Tomorrow's CPA has established a partnership with Future Business Leaders of America in Maryland and DECA. We look forward to contributing speakers to address these groups on the CPA role in business and the CPA career, to serve as judges in competitions, and to take part in mock interviews and other FBLA programs. Tell your advisor to invite a CPA to your next meeting.

Help! My college fund is empty!

What if you were planning to go to college out of state next year, and you found out that your parents hadn't saved a penny for your education? Don't panic. Financial aid, scholarships and AP courses can ease the burden. www.wsjclassroomedition.com/archive/

CPA career: Environmental accounting

College planning for juniors

Here are some tips:

  • Remember: colleges often look for challenging coursework, a strong GPA, and involvement in extracurricular activities such as sports, volunteer work, or church.
  • Get a Social Security number. You'll need it to apply for college and financial aid.
  • Start looking through college catalogs and guidebooks.
  • Find 10 colleges you'd like to attend. Plan to apply to at least three.
  • Talk to your parents and high school counselor about where you want to go.
  • Study and register for the PSAT.
  • Obtain dates and locations of college fairs and "parent nights" in your local area.

Accounting word of the week: U

Unleveraged: Operating without the use of borrowed money. Remaining unleveraged reduces a company's risk but may also prevent the company from taking advantage of opportunities it could pursue with borrowed money. Find more definitions at www.investorwords.com.
